- After high school at Lisgar Collegiate, Lawrence worked for one year at External Affairs and then joined the Canadian Army in 1941. By the end of the war, he was a Lieutenant in the Intelligence Corps. In 1946, he joined the Communications Branch of the National Research Council (now Communications Security Establishment). Except for the period 1969-1973 as a Liaison Officer in Washington, D.C., he remained in Ottawa until retirement in December,1974.
